Hertz Worldwide Car Rental Hertz, the world's leading vehicle renting organization, is represented in the United States and more than 140 foreign countries, operating a fleet of 500,000 vehicles from more than 5,500 locations.

The pioneer of auto renting was Walter L. Jacobs who in September of 1918, at the age of 22, opened a car-rental operation in Chicago. Starting with a dozen Model T Fords, which he repaired and repainted himself, Jacobs expanded his operation to the point where, within five years, the business generated annual revenues of about $1 million.

In 1923, Jacobs sold his car-rental concern to John Hertz, President of Yellow Cab and Yellow Truck and Coach Manufacturing Company. Jacobs continued as Hertz' top operating and administrative executive.

This rental business, called Hertz Drive-Ur-Self System, was acquired in 1926 by General Motors Corporation when it bought Yellow Truck from John Hertz.

Hertz is headquartered in Park Ridge, New Jersey. Its current headquarters location opened in 1988. Prior to that the corporation was based in New York and, before that, Chicago.

Oklahoma City, OK, is the site of Hertz' Worldwide Reservation Center and Data Center, established in 1970, and its Financial Center, established in 1994.

Car rental, the largest and best known of Hertz' activities, is conducted from more than 1,100 locations in the United States and from approximately 3,900 international locations. Hertz offers a wide variety of current-model cars on a short-term rental basis -- daily, weekly or monthly -- at airports, in downtown and suburban business centers, and in residential areas and resort locales.

Hertz has scored many "firsts" in the industry. Pioneering Hertz was the first to move car-rental locations out of backstreet garages and offer a coast-to-coast network of convenient, attractive car-rental locations. The company was the first to make available cars in many sizes, makes and models -- allowing renters to choose vehicles to meet various needs. Hertz Car Rental

One of the most significant pioneering activities Hertz developed was the "fly-drive" car rental -- combining the use of a rented car with a plane trip.

In 1995, Hertz introduced in the U.S. its NeverLost® on-board navigation system. The user friendly route-guidance system provides turn-by-turn driving directions to virtually any destination within a geographic area by means of an in-car, four-inch video screen, with computer-generated voice prompts, mounted in the front of the car's interior between driver and passenger seats. Hertz offers NeverLost® at over 50 locations in 35 cities across the U.S. in approximately 8,000 vehicles. These can be prebooked by globalCARS. Click here for more information.

Because of its past affiliation with Ford, the rental fleets of most Hertz locations consist of Ford and Ford brands such as Mazda, Mercury and Lincoln. It is not uncommon, however, to find Hertz rental cars from non-Ford companies such as Toyota, Hyundai, Kia and General Motors. Today Hertz Car Hire has grown to include some 1,900 offices in the United States and approximately 5,100 international locations - with 42 locations throughout Australia.
